Dear parents,
Thank you for enrolling your child in one of the best early childhood music programs in the world. You will find MUSIKGARTEN classes literally all over the world. It is a beautiful picture to watch parents and their children experience music and movement together.
I want you to know what a joy it is to teach your children. Music has something special for each child no matter his or her age. I’m looking forward to meeting you and your child in person in the days ahead, but I want to take the opportunity to communicate some information before your class meets.

During the class I want you, the parent, to model every action that I do; whether it’s the way I’m tapping or the way I’m holding my rhythm sticks. If you automatically do what I do then I will have to give you very little vocal instruction.
Sometimes it may seem that your child is not interested in participating, this is normal. They are still learning by auditory and visual stimulation. It is typical for some children to participate on the LAST day of class!

Throughout the weeks ahead, you will notice that we will repeat sequences, songs, rhythm patterns to help your child become familiar with the repertoire. Your child will learn and participate at his or her own level. I say this to put your mind at ease.
In the middle of class it may be necessary to meet the specific need of your child, (restroom break, crying, diaper change, etc.) You will not interrupt the class, just meet the need then rejoin the class. Please DON’T BRING FOOD TO CLASS, this is a BIG distraction for the other children. If you bring siblings to the class, I do ask that they join the group and participate at their own level. Try not to compare your child’s ability with the other children in the class, because some children have been in the program for a year or more.

While we are making rhythmic gestures, clapping, tapping or shaking, I do ask that you model the action NOT manipulate. Do not hold on to their hands and force them to clap or shake. Gently get them started tapping or playing an instrument if they allow you. If we model they will eventually imitate. With your help, this will be a very successful experience for you and your child.

Lastly, please participate in the activities and do not hold conversations with the other adults during the class. When we participate, we are showing our children that we think this is important and fun.

MusikGarten is an exciting program for infants to age seven. Classes are
taught by early childhood music and movement specialist, Martha Hills.
Children love music for the pure joy of it! When nurtured in a child’s
early years, the rewards of a musical foundation expand to provide
immeasurable results. Music is a vital link for all future learning.
Martha’s MusikGarten program provides opportunities for children
to build confidence in musical expression and lays a foundation for
future music learning. Through a combination of songs, movement
games, instruments, story telling, and listening, children are exposed
to a wonderful musical experience. Created by early childhood music
specialists Lorna Heyge and Audrey Sillick, each level of the curriculum
introduces children to musical concepts and provides opportunities
for sensory-motor exploration, language development, and abstract
thinking. Classes are designed to grow with your children. Children
learn best through moving and listening. MusikGarten classes will help
them grow and develop into successful students.
